Bring the future use into the first conversation
Tell the roofing contractor whether rooftop solar is planned now or later. Share available information about the proposed system and who is designing it. Coordination is easier when future equipment is part of the brief rather than a surprise after the roof is complete.
Identify the actual roof and attachment
Ask the relevant suppliers to confirm the proposed panel and attachment combination. Standing seam is not one universal profile. A claim that a mounting method avoids a penetration does not, by itself, establish suitability for the building or the complete installation.
Separate responsibilities
Clarify who designs and installs roof interfaces, electrical work and access arrangements. Ask how warranty and future service questions will be handled. Keep the responses with the quotations so responsibility does not disappear between trades.
Keep documents available
Retain roof product information and final equipment records for future maintenance. The MCA technical library includes guidance on metal roofing and solar mounting; use it as background for the project team, not as a site-specific design. Final decisions belong with the qualified parties assessing the installation.
Put both trades in the same conversation
Ask the roofing and solar teams to identify the roof system, proposed attachment approach, access requirements and any further assessment needed. Share the same drawings with both teams. If solar is only a future possibility, distinguish confirmed requirements from assumptions. A phrase such as solar ready is not a complete specification and should not substitute for the design responsibilities on the actual project.
Keep the handover usable for later work
Record the installed roof profile, material, finish and applicable product documents. Ask who should be contacted before future attachments or roof penetrations are proposed. Keep the roof and solar warranties together where both systems are installed, with clear contacts for each scope. For a later solar project, give the new team this record before equipment selection so compatibility and remaining design questions can be addressed early.
